How Medeco M3 security works
Medeco's core innovation is the angled pin tumbler. In a standard lock, pins slide straight up and down and only need to reach the correct height. In a Medeco, each pin must also rotate to a specific angle.
The key has both cut depths (standard) AND angled cuts that rotate each pin to the correct orientation. Without the correct rotation, a side-bar blocks the cylinder from turning even if the heights are correct.
This combination defeats the standard pick attack. Picking works by feeling the shear-line alignment of each pin in turn. Without being able to feel pin rotation, the attacker cannot determine if they've successfully set the angle - they can only guess.
And a wrong angle trips the side-bar even if the height is right. The result is that standard pick techniques cannot open a properly-functioning Medeco M3.
Bump attacks also fail on Medeco. A bump key relies on transferring energy to all the pins simultaneously, bouncing them above the shear line. Medeco's side-bar requires not just shear-line alignment but also correct rotation, which bump keys cannot produce.
There are no known field-level bump attacks on Medeco M3 cylinders.
Drill resistance comes from hardened steel inserts placed at critical attack points in the cylinder body. A drill targeting the side bar or the pin chambers hits the hardened insert and either bounces or breaks the drill bit. Combined with the pick and bump resistance, Medeco is as close to attack-proof as a residential cylinder can be.
