How does modern car key programming actually work?
Every passenger vehicle sold in the United States since the late 1990s has an immobilizer system. The engine ECU will not start the engine unless it reads a valid transponder chip in the key. Cutting a mechanical key without programming the chip gets you a key that turns the cylinder but will not crank the engine.
Different manufacturers use different immobilizer architectures. Ford uses PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System). Honda uses HISS.
Nissan uses NATS. BMW uses EWS on older models and CAS (Car Access System) on newer ones. Mercedes uses EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch).
Toyota uses G-chip on older models and H-chip on newer. Volkswagen and Audi use Megamos 48 crypto.
Each architecture requires different programming procedures. Some can be added to the car with a simple OBDII scan tool (Ford PATS on many years). Some require pin code lookup from the VIN (Nissan, Chrysler).
Some require reading the EEPROM directly from an immobilizer module on the bench (many BMW and Mercedes). The difficulty rating varies from 5 minutes to 2 hours depending on brand, year, and model.

- Always keep a spare key off-property. Never inside the car, never in a magnetic box under the bumper.
- Photograph your key blade before damage. If the blade snaps, we can cut a replacement from the photo faster.
- Replace key fob batteries every 2 years. A dead fob battery is the #1 reason push-to-start cars 'won't start'.
- If your ignition cylinder is getting sticky, rekey it before it seizes. A proactive rekey is $120; a seized cylinder replacement is $380.
- Smart keys need to be re-learned if the car battery dies hard. Always jump or boost before assuming the key is broken.
- Never let an ignition cylinder run dry. A drop of Tri-Flow or graphite powder every year keeps brass wafers clean.

Can you make a car key without the original?
Yes. We cut and program a new key from the lock cylinder, the VIN, or the immobilizer module - no original key needed. This works for transponder keys, smart keys, and push-to-start fobs for every major brand including Ford, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, and more.
How much cheaper are you than a dealership?
Typically 40 to 55 percent less. A smart key the dealer quotes at $450 we usually do for $200 to $260 including programming. A Ford PATS transponder the dealer quotes at $320 we do for $150 to $180.

Can you program a push-to-start smart key?
Yes. Push-to-start proximity keys (smart keys) are our daily work. We program prox keys for Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Ford, and more.
Do I need to tow my car anywhere?
No in almost every case. We bring the programming equipment to the car. The only exceptions are a tiny number of modules that require bench work (rare, usually older BMW or Mercedes) or when the car has a mechanical problem unrelated to the key.
My key fob stopped working - is it the battery?
Most of the time, yes. Fob batteries last 18-36 months. We can swap the battery and test the fob.
If it still fails after a fresh battery we diagnose whether it's a receiver antenna issue, a dead fob board, or an immobilizer coil problem.
Can you fix a stuck or seized ignition?
Yes. We rekey or replace ignition cylinders onsite. A sticky cylinder often just needs a rebuild and cleaning.
A seized cylinder usually needs replacement with a matching key cut to the door lock. Most jobs finish in 60 to 90 minutes.
Do you work on European cars like Audi, Mercedes, BMW?
Yes. European brands are more work than Asian brands but fully in scope. We handle BMW EWS and CAS, Mercedes EIS, Audi/VW Megamos 48, and Volvo/Porsche immobilizers.
Bring the paperwork if the car is pre-2014 and we'll verify before committing.
What if the chip doesn't program?
Rare, but it happens with old programming modules that don't respond to OBDII. In that case we have a backup procedure: bench-read the immobilizer module, add the key via direct EEPROM, reinstall. Our flat-rate quote covers the backup procedure; no surprise upcharges.
Can you make keys for motorcycles and boats?
Yes. Motorcycle keys, ATV keys, and most boat ignition keys we can cut onsite. Transponder-equipped motorcycles (some modern BMW and Harley) take bench work.
Marine keys are usually simple mechanical - we cut from the lock cylinder.
