Threshold types, ADA requirements, and selection

Door thresholds come in several types based on material, application, and intended function. Understanding the options helps specify correct replacement.

ADA Requirements: ADA 404.2.5 limits threshold height to 1/2 inch maximum in new construction, 3/4 inch in existing buildings. Thresholds exceeding 1/4 inch must have beveled edges with 1:2 maximum slope. All interior doors in commercial and public facilities must meet these requirements for accessible routes.

Aluminum Thresholds: Most common commercial threshold. Durable, economical, available in many profiles. ADA-compliant heights (1/2 inch or less) with beveled edges.

Anodized finishes (aluminum, dark bronze, brass-colored) match typical door hardware. Brands: Pemko, NGP, Hager.

Bronze Thresholds: Higher-end applications. Natural bronze patinas over time to darker finish. Used in prestige commercial entries, historic buildings, and coordinated with bronze hardware.

More expensive than aluminum but more attractive.

Brass Thresholds: Polished or satin brass for traditional commercial applications. Like bronze, more expensive than aluminum but coordinated with brass hardware. Common in older commercial buildings being restored.

Threshold Functions:

Interior Saddles: Simple threshold transitions between rooms or from room to hallway. Minimal weatherproofing needed. Focus on ADA compliance and clean appearance.

Exterior Thresholds: Weather resistance is critical. Integrated rubber or silicone gaskets seal against water infiltration. Sloped to drain water outward.

Integrated sweeps or separate sweeps mounted to door.

Fire Door Thresholds: UL-listed thresholds for fire-rated door assemblies. Maintain door fire rating. Specific brands and models approved for fire door application.

Ramped Thresholds: Higher thresholds (existing buildings where floor level differs) ramped to meet ADA slope requirements. Transitions the height over a gradual slope that wheelchairs can cross.
