Commercial intercom systems bridge the gap between visitor arrival and building entry. When someone arrives at your door, they need a way to communicate with staff or residents and be let in or refused entry. That's the job of the intercom system.

Modern intercoms have evolved far beyond basic audio. Video intercoms show visitors on screen, IP-based systems integrate with computer networks, multi-tenant systems handle apartment buildings and office complexes, and integrated access control combines intercom with card readers and door release.

Intercom technology and system types

Intercom systems come in several technology generations and form factors. Choosing the right system matters because intercoms are user-facing infrastructure that tenants, employees, and visitors interact with daily.

Audio-Only Intercoms: The budget option. Speak through the entry panel, listen at the master station. Works but provides no visual verification of visitors.

Acceptable for low-risk applications or back doors.

Video Intercoms: Entry panel includes camera, master station has color LCD display. User sees who's at the door before releasing the lock. Essential for security-conscious applications and recommended for all new installations.

Modern video intercoms have 140-degree wide angle lenses, night vision, and HD resolution.

IP Intercoms: Use the building's computer network (Ethernet/Wi-Fi) rather than dedicated intercom cabling. Benefits: can integrate with VoIP phone systems, mobile apps for answering from smartphones, and multi-site connections. Required infrastructure: PoE switches, reliable network, managed IT.

Multi-Tenant Systems: Apartment buildings and office complexes need directory-based systems where visitors scroll through tenant names and select who to call. Modern systems are digital with touchscreen directories, while older systems use button-per-tenant panels. Multi-tenant systems can be audio-only or video.

Integrated Access Control: Many modern intercoms integrate with access control - the entry panel includes both intercom and card reader. Employees badge in directly, visitors press intercom to request entry. Unified hardware reduces door congestion and installation cost.

Remote Answering: IP systems enable remote answering via smartphone app. Staff can answer intercom calls and release door from anywhere. Useful for small businesses without dedicated receptionist or for after-hours coverage.

Code considerations: Intercoms themselves don't typically require code compliance, but their integration with access control must meet egress requirements (NFPA 101) and ADA reach requirements.
