Motorcycle key technology explained
Most motorcycles still use mechanical-only ignition keys. Harley-Davidson (except very recent models), all Japanese standard models (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki), and most vintage and classic bikes use simple metal blade keys without any chip. Transponder technology entered motorcycles through luxury European brands. BMW Motorrad has used transponders on most bikes since 2006. Ducati adopted transponder systems on the 1199 Panigale and later.
