Car key programming is the process of encoding a transponder chip or smart key fob with the encrypted data that your specific vehicle's immobilizer will accept. Cutting a mechanical key without programming gets you a key that turns the cylinder but won't start the engine. Programming is the invisible half of a car key replacement.
Every major car brand uses its own immobilizer system with its own encryption protocol. Ford uses PATS. Honda uses HISS.

How immobilizer systems work
Every modern car has an immobilizer - an electronic system that prevents the engine from starting unless a valid key is present. When you insert the key or press the start button, the immobilizer control module sends a challenge signal to the key's transponder chip. The chip responds with an encrypted answer.
If the answer matches what the immobilizer expects, the engine starts. If not, the engine cranks briefly and shuts down, or refuses to crank at all.
Programming a new key means writing the correct encryption data into the new key's chip so it responds correctly to the immobilizer challenge. Different brands use different chip types (Megamos 48, HITAG2, Philips Crypto, ID46, ID48, HITAG3, HITAG-AES, etc.) and different encryption protocols. Equipment must support the specific chip and protocol for your vehicle.
Programming procedures vary. Some brands allow OBDII-based programming where we plug into the diagnostic port and write new key data directly. Other brands require PIN code lookup from the VIN before programming can proceed.
Some brands require removing a module (EIS, CAS, BCM) for bench EEPROM work when OBDII fails. Each approach has its place in our toolkit.
For most 2000-2015 mainstream brands (Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevy, Nissan), OBDII programming works reliably and is fast. For 2015+ luxury brands (BMW, Mercedes, Audi), advanced procedures are sometimes needed. For 1996-2005 older vehicles, specialty tools like Tango+ handle the legacy chip types that newer equipment may have dropped support for.

Can you program without the original key?
Yes, for most vehicles. All-keys-lost procedures work for Ford, Honda, Toyota, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and most other major brands. Some very new models (2024+) have limited all-keys-lost support as manufacturer tools catch up.

Do you program motorcycle keys?
Some yes, some no. Harley-Davidson, Honda motorcycles, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and BMW Motorrad all have programmable key systems. Programming requires brand-specific motorcycle equipment that we have for major brands but not all specialty motorcycles.
Can you program a key that's different from my existing one?
Yes. You can add a different-style key (remote head vs smart key, for example) as long as it's an OEM-compatible option for your vehicle. We verify compatibility before programming and only use approved key types for your specific model.
What if programming fails mid-session?
Rare but possible. Our Autel IM608 Pro has fault recovery for most situations. For harder failures, we have backup equipment (Xhorse VVDI, Smart Pro, Tango+) that often succeeds where the primary tool fails.
If all equipment fails, we refund and refer to dealer - this happens in less than 1% of cases.
Do dealers program keys better than locksmiths?
No, for standard key replacement. Dealers use the same chip data and programming protocols. The equipment is equivalent (or sometimes ours is better because we have multiple brand tools while dealers only have their own).
The difference is dealers charge 2-3x more because of overhead.
Can you program a Tesla key?
Yes for Tesla key cards and phone keys. Tesla uses NFC key cards rather than traditional transponder keys for most models. Replacement cards can be ordered from Tesla and provisioned via the phone app.
For Tesla Model S/X older generations with traditional fobs, we can handle fob programming too.
Will programming affect my car's other electronics?
No. Key programming only affects the immobilizer module's key list. Other modules (engine, transmission, infotainment) are not touched.
Radio presets, seat memory, climate settings, and all other customizations remain intact after key programming.
How often do you need to update programming equipment?
Autel and Xhorse release firmware updates every 2-4 weeks as new vehicles come to market. We keep our equipment current with all updates - this is how we stay capable of programming 2024+ vehicles. Firmware subscriptions are part of our operating cost.
