How smart key push-to-start works
Smart key push-to-start has several technical components working together. The smart key itself contains a battery-powered RF transmitter that sends an encrypted identification code continuously when powered. The car has multiple RF antennas positioned around the vehicle (door handles, trunk, interior dashboard) that detect the smart key's signal and measure signal strength to determine approximate position.
When you approach the car, the door handle antennas detect the smart key and unlock the door on touch. When you press the push-to-start button, the interior antennas verify the smart key is inside the cabin and matches the car's authorized key list. If both checks pass, the immobilizer allows engine start.
The smart key also contains a traditional transponder chip as backup. If the smart key's RF transmitter battery dies, you can still start the car by holding the smart key near the push-to-start button - the transponder chip acts as a passive key read by the button area.
Programming a smart key means writing the encrypted identification code into a new smart key so the car's antennas recognize it.
