Nissan NATS has gone through several generations. NATS-I (1998-2003) was the original system using simple transponder chips. NATS-II (2004-2008) added encryption.
NATS-III (2009-2012) introduced PIN code authorization. NATS-IV (2013-2018) became standard for smart keys. NATS-V (2019+) has additional security for current models.
Programming varies by generation. NATS-I and NATS-II can be programmed via OBDII without PIN in some cases. NATS-III and newer require PIN code lookup from the VIN - we use the Autel IM608 Pro's built-in Nissan PIN database or Xhorse VVDI for the rare cases where Autel doesn't cover a specific model.
Smart key programming (2013+) adds complexity because the smart key has both a transponder chip and a BCM (Body Control Module) that need to be synchronized. Smart key programming takes 5-15 minutes longer than transponder key programming for the same model year.
