How proximity keys work
Proximity keys work through a continuous dialog between the key and the vehicle. The key's internal RF transmitter sends an encrypted identification code continuously when powered. The vehicle has multiple antennas positioned around the car - typically in the door handles, trunk area, and inside the cabin.
When you approach the car, the door handle antennas detect the key's signal. The car verifies the encrypted code matches an authorized key, and the door unlocks automatically when you touch the handle. This is called "passive entry" because you don't have to press any button.
Once inside the car, the cabin antennas detect the key's signal. When you press the push-to-start button, the car verifies the key is inside the cabin (not just near the car) and matches the authorized key list. If both checks pass, the engine starts.
Programming a proximity key means writing the encrypted identification code into a new fob so the car's antennas recognize it. This requires the same OBDII or bench programming as other smart keys, plus RF synchronization steps to calibrate the antennas to the new fob. Our equipment handles all of this.
